Intermission

Une foule d’orchestres, de festivals, d’ateliers et de sociétés de guitare font appel à Byun pour des concerts en solo et des cours de maître. Ces dernières saisons, Byun s’est produit en tant que soliste avec des orchestres, notamment le Buffalo Philharmonic, l’Utah Symphony, le West Los Angeles Symphony, le New Juilliard Ensemble, l’Aspen Music Festival Orchestra, entre autres. Elle a donné des récitals en solo dans le cadre de la Kumho Young Artist Series, du Philadelphia Guitar Festival, de la Aspen-Salida Concert Series, du Toronto Guitar Weekend, de Guitar Montréal, du Ellnora | The Guitar Festival et du San Diego Guitar Festival. Michelle Fratus, présidente du conseil d’administration de la Knoxville Guitar Society, l’a acclamée pour son interprétation “éloquente d’un programme varié et stimulant”, et Heather Morand Clark, présidente de la Guitar Society of Toronto, pour sa “confiance, sa passion, son excellente projection et son grand contraste dynamique”.

Soucieuse d’élargir le rôle du musicien du XXIe siècle, le programme des concerts de Mme Byun propose souvent de la musique contemporaine aux côtés du répertoire traditionnel. Comme le dit Byun elle-même, “il est vital et passionnant pour le public que les concerts associent le nouveau et l’ancien. Pour que la musique pour guitare continue à se développer, je crois qu’il faut cultiver activement les nouvelles œuvres dans la programmation, et j’espère que le public quitte mes concerts avec de nouvelles expériences”. Cette aptitude à naviguer à la fois dans le répertoire classique et dans les œuvres nouvelles l’a amenée à cofonder Sounding Board : The New Music Initiative for Guitarists and Composers. Le projet se concentre sur la promotion des relations de collaboration entre compositeurs et interprètes pour créer de nouvelles œuvres pour guitare, et son festival inaugural à Besançon, en France, en 2019, a été salué comme “extraordinaire, au sens strict du terme”, par La Presse de Gray en France.

Le premier enregistrement de Byun en 2020 a été salué par Soundboard Magazine comme “un très beau disque”. Dès les premières notes de la “Gallarda” de l’Escarraman de Castelnuovo-Tedesco, nous avons droit à une musicalité extraordinaire, une assurance technique et une beauté du son.” American Record Guide dit “L’interprétation de Byun les anime avec des phrasés créatifs, des articulations, des espacements et des dynamiques, qui emmènent l’auditeur au-delà de la plupart des performances que j’ai entendues.”

Née à Séoul, en Corée, Byun a commencé à jouer de la guitare à l’âge de six ans. À onze ans, elle est montée sur scène pour son premier récital solo, ce qui lui a permis de commencer très tôt, à l’adolescence, à donner de nombreux concerts en Corée, qui ont été accueillis avec enthousiasme, notamment par des millions de visionnages sur YouTube. À l’adolescence, elle s’est fait remarquer au niveau national en remportant le premier prix de trois concours renommés : l’Association coréenne de guitare, l’Association musicale de Corée et le concours international de la jeunesse de la Guitar Foundation of America.

Byun a rapidement déménagé aux États-Unis, où elle a brièvement étudié à Los Angeles avant de s’installer à New York, où elle est entrée à la Juilliard School à l’âge de seize ans. Elle est titulaire d’une licence et d’une maîtrise en musique de la Juilliard School et d’un doctorat en arts musicaux de l’université de Californie du Sud. Elle est reconnaissante à l’enseignement magistral de ses pédagogues, qui incluent Scott Tennant, William Kanengiser, Chen Zhi, Tae-soo Kim et Sharon Isbin.

En 2020, Byun a cofondé Guitarlab qui a fourni une plateforme d’apprentissage en ligne innovante offrant des cours de pointe conçus pour les jeunes professionnels du monde entier. Byun fait actuellement partie de la faculté de guitare de la California State University Fullerton. Elle est parrainée par Augustine Strings et joue sur une guitare de Dieter Mueller (2019). Bokyung Byun

A bevy of orchestras, festivals, workshops, and guitar societies look to Byun for solo performances and masterclasses. In recent seasons, Byun has performed as a soloist with orchestras, including the Buffalo Philharmonic, the Utah Symphony, West Los Angeles Symphony, New Juilliard Ensemble, the Aspen Music Festival Orchestra, among others. Her solo recital highlights include performances at the Kumho Young Artist Series, Philadelphia Guitar Festival, Aspen-Salida Concert Series, Toronto Guitar Weekend, Guitar Montreìal, Ellnora | The Guitar Festival, and San Diego Guitar Festival. She was acclaimed for performing “eloquently through a diverse and challenging program,” by Michelle Fratus, president of the board of the Knoxville Guitar Society, and having “confidence, passion, excellent projection and great dynamic contrast” by Heather Morand Clark, president of the Guitar Society of Toronto.

Committed to expanding the role of a 21st-century musician, Byun’s concert program often features contemporary music alongside traditional repertoire. As Byun herself says, “it’s vital and exciting to audiences for concerts to join the new with the old. For guitar music to continue to grow, I believe that new works must actively be cultivated in programming, and it is my hope that audiences leave my performances with new experiences.” This skill at navigating both classic repertoire and fresh work has led her to co-found Sounding Board: The New Music Initiative for Guitarists and Composers. The project focuses on promoting collaborative relationships between composers and performers to create new works for guitar, and its inaugural festival in Besançon, France in 2019 has been praised as “extraordinary, in the strict sense of the word,” by La Presse de Gray in France. 

Byun’s debut recording in 2020 has been praised by Soundboard Magazine as “a very beautiful disc. Born in Seoul, Korea, Byun began playing guitar at the age of six. At eleven, she took the stage for her first solo recital, leading to an early start in her teen years performing numerous concert tours around Korea, to enthusiastic response, including millions of views on YouTube. By her teen years, she had gained national attention for first-prize finishes in three renowned competitions: the Korea Guitar Association, the Music Association of Korea, and the Guitar Foundation of America International Youth Competition.

Byun soon moved to the United States, where she briefly studied in Los Angeles before moving to New York City, where she entered The Juilliard School at the age of sixteen. She holds Bachelor of Music and Master of Music degrees from The Juilliard School and a Doctor of Musical Arts degree from the University of Southern California. She is grateful to the masterful instruction of her pedagogues, who include Scott Tennant, William Kanengiser, Chen Zhi, Tae-soo Kim, and Sharon Isbin. 

In 2020, Byun co-founded Guitarlab which has provided an innovative online learning platform offering cutting-edge classes designed for young professionals around the world.
